President Donald Trump commissioned a cross-party group of lawmakers to evaluate the state of the opioid abuse crisis and to develop recommendations.
The Commission on Combating Drug Addiction and the Opioid Crisis recently released their draft report, and in it they urged the President to declare a national state of emergency.
In fact, the Commission specifically referenced the 9/11 attacks and the impact that the government’s response had to a common cause.
The parallels between 9/11 and the opioid crisis were also referenced as the report reads:
“With approximately 142 Americans dying every day, America is enduring a death toll equal to September 11th every three weeks.”
